Off Grid Stays is a collection of four architect-designed unique treehouses in ten private acres of Montana larch forest, thirty minutes from the west entrance to Glacier National Park. Each unit is independent, elevated above the forest floor on steel stilts, and positioned across the acreage for privacy and independent access. The property sits outside Columbia Falls and Hungry Horse, in the Flathead Valley, at the edge of where all roads lead into the wilderness. At times, this place can feel so full of life between both our guests and our local residents (both 2-legged and 4), while in others, it can feel like you’re the only ones out there for miles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE ARCHITECTURE<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structures are built from black corrugated steel with cedar accents – materials chosen for permanence in an ever-changing mountain climate, not for visual softness. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the forest rather than away from it, making it feel as if the interior is an extension of the trees rather than a shelter from them. Steel stilts keep each unit elevated above the ground plane. The architecture was made as a reason to look up at just as much as to look out of.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE SETTING<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Whitefish Range runs along the northern horizon, while Glacier National Park sits, in waiting, directly to the East. Montana larch – the only conifer that turns in fall – surrounds the property, changing the light with every season. Deer and elk move through the trees without schedule, oftentimes in droves and herds. At night, with no light pollution, the sky over the Flathead Valley is the kind of dark that really reminds you that there’s so much light out there beyond our world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE WILDLIFE<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White-tailed deer cross the clearings most mornings. Elk move through in herds, especially in fall. Black bears are regular visitors – guests have watched them from the deck without either party minding. The valley sits within the broader Glacier ecosystem, where grizzly bears, moose, and mountain lions range through the same corridors. From the elevation of the treehouses, you see it all without intruding on any of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

WHAT OFF-GRID TRULY MEANS<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we pride ourselves in being rugged and off-grid, that doesn’t mean that you’re going to be going without. Each unit comes equipped with high-speed internet provided by Starlink, Smart TVs, a full kitchen, in-unit washer\/dryer, and fire pits both on the deck and below the house. Off-grid is a description of where you are, not what you’re giving up. Four-wheel drive is required December through April – that’s the only concession the terrain asks of you. With that being said, due to the nature of our build, we are not ADA accessible by conventional means; Each treehouse is entered via a sole staircase, with treehouse 2 and 3 being two-stories each.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
