THE PROPERTY
Sitting on steel stilts, elevated above the forest floor, our treehouses wouldn’t be what they were without the land they rest on. With the Whitefish Range along the northwestern horizon, and Glacier National Park straight to the East, you’re sure to be held within greatness out here. Montana larch – the only conifer that turns in fall – surrounds the property, making sure that your experience is of a different shade through every season. Deer cross through the clearings most mornings – Elk in herds, especially in fall. Black bears are regular visitors too. And if you’re lucky, you may even see a grizzly from the comfort of your balcony.
VISITING IN SPRING · APRIL — MAY
THE ROAD BEFORE THE CARS
Going-to-the-Sun Road opens to bicycles in April before it opens to cars in mid-June. For about eight weeks, you can ride one of the most scenic roads in North America with no traffic. Wildflowers start to bloom bright in the valleys. Waterfalls peak as the snowpack melts. Bears are active after hibernation.
Good to know: Weather is unpredictable — snow one day, 60 degrees the next. Spring is the quietest and most affordable time at Off Grid Stays.
VISITING IN SUMMER · JUNE — AUGUST
PEAK SEASON
Going-to-the-Sun Road (typically) fully opens in mid-June, and with it, all 700+ miles of trail in Glacier National Park become accessible. Long days, warm temperatures, and the full range of the park available. Whitewater rafting on the Flathead River runs mid-May through September. Summer is when our beautiful backyard comes to life.
Good to know: Peak season means peak demand — for the park and for us. Book early. Temperatures reach the 80s and 90s. Carry bear spray on every hike. Bring extra water everywhere you go.
VISITING IN FALL · SEPTEMBER — NOVEMBER
LARCH SEASON
Montana larch is the only conifer that changes color in fall. In mid-October, the hillsides around the property turn gold – the kind of gold that looks like thousands of tiny lanterns in just the right light. If we’re lucky, it can last a few weeks. September is warm and uncrowded, as the park season comes to a close. Elk rut in the meadows. And the wind begins to feel more crisp in the evenings.
Good to know: Temperatures range from the 30s to 60s. Mornings are cold. First snow can come as early as late September at elevation. Bears and moose are at their active, both preparing for the winter and tending to their young.
VISITING IN WINTER · DECEMBER — MARCH
SNOW ON THE TREEHOUSES
Whitefish Mountain Resort is 40 minutes away – with over 300 inches of annual snowfall, and lift tickets at a fraction of the price to comparable resorts. Glacier National Park stays accessible year-round with winter hiking on snowshoes. Back at the treehouses, the fire pit works better in the cold. The nights are long and the air is sharp. Winter is when everything is at its quietest, and quite frankly, it’s our favorite time of year to snuggle up in these beautiful spaces.
Good to know: 4WD or AWD with winter tires is required. The access road is plowed but can be steep in areas. Temperatures drop well below zero. Bring layers and be prepared for snow.
